A brief introduction to some of the characters in Adam Yamey's novel ROGUE OF ROUXVILLE

MEET JAKOB KLEIN

Jakob Klein, born in Bavaria in 1846, was invited to join his older cousin, a successful businessman, in southern Africa. He and his friend Leopold Reitlinger are given a general store to run. It is in Rouxville, a small new town in the wilds of the Orange Free State.  Careless of his appearance, and carefree in his outlook on life, he is a good salesman, popular not only with his customers but also with the Africans, whom most other Europeans regard with varying degrees of disdain. Ever keen to clinch a deal in order to support his family, some of his business methods do not bear close scrutiny.

MEET HENDRINA

Jakob's buxom wife, Hendrina, tolerates  much more than most other wives would, rarely displaying her disappointment with her husband's dodgy business behaviour and heavy drinking. When trouble looms, she rarely loses her cool. She usually finds a way of getting out of the mess her loving husband has got them into, and then a way of moving forward. Jakob is indeed lucky to be married to someone as unique as Hendrina.

MEET LEOPOLD REITLINGER

Leopold Reitlinger, who was Jakob's school chum, accompanied him from Bavaria to the Orange Free State. A stickler for doing things properly, obsessed with punctuality, conventional in his behaviour and appearance,  it's quite surprising that he and Jakob have managed to run a business together for so long.

MEET AMOHELANG

Amohelang, an African helper in the general store, enjoys his booze as much as Jakob, his favourite employer. When there's trouble, he does not hesitate to help Jakob, whom he regards as an honorary brother.

 MEET VAN DER WALT

Dirk Van Der Walt, a landowner and farmer, thinks that he is immune to flattery. He is not someone with whom you would want to start an argument. Take one look at his face, and then you'll know the reason.

MEET CONSTABLE RÖTTCHER

Constable Heinrich Röttcher is a good friend of Jakob's. You'll often find them together, knocking back glasses of Cape brandy at the Anderson Hotel, Rouxville's only drinking hole.
